Advertising online can be frustrating. Most people do not fully understand how to properly target their ads, so they end up wasting money on ads which fail to bring them the right customers. Social media advertising solves this problem by allowing advertisers to narrowly target their ads to a very specific audience.
If you’re doing business online then you already know how important it is to have a good online marketing strategy that includes social media. Social media marketing with Facebook is one of the best options you have if you want to promote your business online. Here are five ways to better target customers on Facebook.

Facebook offers the ability to target customers by their specific location. If you have a brick and mortar business in the city you live in, this is definitely one of the most useful features for targeting people in your area. Facebook allows you to target not only by city and state but also by zipcode.
Location or geo-targeting can also be useful even if you’re not living in the area you are targeting. Perhaps your products or services are better suited for people in specific areas.
If you have the ability to sell goods and services from a distance through shipping or digital delivery methods, then you really have a lot of advertising power with Facebook ads. The ability to target the best potential customers for your business should result in more sales overall.
The more you know about who your best customer really is, the easier it will be for you to target them using Facebook. Facebook offers a variety of options pertaining to demographics. You can target based on education, gender, ethnicity, and more. The ability to target based on these criteria will help you to narrow down your audience even further.
The best thing you can do as an advertiser on Facebook is to narrow down your specific audience as much as possible. This way you will not waste money on ads being served to people who would most likely never buy from you. The only drawback is that the more narrowly you define your audience, the more costly your advertising rate can be.
Demographic information which you add into Facebook will generally not raise your advertising rate so much, but it will affect it to some degree.
One of the best things about marketing on Facebook is the ability to market to people based on their specific interests. This type of feature is something specific to Facebook and for online marketers, it’s a dream come true.
When people use Facebook, they are constantly “liking” all kinds of content. This is how Facebook can determine whether or not a person may have a particular interest that can be narrowed down to a specific keyword.
If you’re selling dog toys, then you will want to advertise only to those people who have dogs. Facebook will allow you target by interest, based on keywords. For example, keywords like ‘dog owner’ or ‘dog training’ can be input into the Facebook advertising platform. That will show you how many people have that specific interest, and you can advertise to them accordingly.
There is no limit to the number of keywords you can input, but it’s important to remember that the more keywords you have, the greater the cost to run your ads can become. You will be able to determine the cost of your advertising rate in real-time as you setup your ad and narrow down your audience.
Facebook will estimate the cost of your ads before you start running them, so you will know approximately how much you will be spending before you run the ads live.
Facebook has several third-party partners which share information with each other about your internet browsing habits. Behavior targeting via Facebook combines data from a Facebook user’s activity on Facebook with other data from third parties.
These third party networks collect data about what types of websites a person visits, what searches they have conducted, how long they stay on particular websites, etc.
The ability to create custom audiences using Facebook’s advertising platform is a less well-known feature, but it can be very powerful when used properly. It’s not always the case, but most of the time the advertising rate for custom audiences is significantly cheaper. This is because you are not relying on all the data supplied by Facebook, but rather you are providing the data.
If you have a list of emails from some other source and you want to display ads to those people on Facebook, the ability to create a custom audience will allow you to do that.
It’s also possible to make a list of Facebook users based on their own unique User ID’s. Some marketing information data collection services can provide you with a list of Facebook User ID’s so that you can use it to create a custom audience.
Custom audiences are created by uploading a data file to Facebook via the Facebook Ads Manager tool. Just a simple excel spreadsheet which contains a list of email addresses or user id numbers will do the trick.
The best way to improve your online marketing strategy on Facebook
One of the best ways you can capitalize on Facebook advertising and get the most bang for your buck is to create a Facebook page for your business and then advertise the page itself. This is a better alternative compared to running an ad which links to your website.
When you run an ad for a website and someone clicks your ad, they may go to the website but you will only have their attention one time. However, if you convince someone to “like” your page, you then have the opportunity to advertise to them many more times via the content of your page.
Once they’ve liked your page they will start seeing your updates and the more times they see your stuff, the more likely they are to buy what you’re selling.

Thank you, Tom..for the great infos..
Thank you for this subject.
Funny you say make a Facebook page for your website. I totally did this all backwards! I had my FB page first and then made the site! People followed me over to the site but it is hard to get them over there. Good news, I am learning as I read your site here how to get them there and keep them on my site. Thank you for that!
Actually, there are a bunch of businesses that are “only” getting a facebook page (or pintrest) and that’s their primary web page. My only concern with that approach is you are really putting all your eggs in one basket and relying on google to index the content on your facebook page.
Another terrific article. I believe the key concept that I will utilize is the idea of advertising your face book page instead of linking to your website. In effect you are lowering the threshold and I love the idea that it gives you the ability to gather likes and resell.
The amount of data people reveal about themselves freely on facebook makes it a marketer’s dream. I love the potential for smartly targeted selling, saves a lot of wasted time.
Hi!
