Infographics are a handy little marketing tool that can pack a big punch.
If you’re not familiar with the term, infographics are a eye-catching visual representation of info, data, or knowledge that are designed to present information in a way that is quick, clear, and compelling. They combine text, images, and design to represent complex information that tells a tale that engages viewers and compels them to share.
In a previous post, I lauded infographics as invaluable tools that can yield big results for your business and discussed some of the best free infographic design tools out there. Today, I’d like to focus on one of my favorites, Canva.
Using Canva’s Free Infographic Design Tool
Canva’s infographic-making program allows members to create eye-catching infographics for free, equipping them with an easy-to-use interface and hundreds of free design elements. It’s a great tool for both beginners and marketing managers on a budget, since it doesn’t require any graphic design knowledge and allows you to craft professional designs.
If you’re thinking of designing your own infographic to use in your content marketing strategy (and you should be), I suggest giving Canva a try. To help you on your way, I’ll walk you through the process of creating an infographic on Canva step-by-step.
Step One: Getting Started
After setting up an account, you’ll be taken to the “start a new design” page. You’ll be presented with a number of options of different things you can design, including posters, presentations, and Facebook posts. Scroll through these options until you reach “blog graphic”.
Step Two: Adding in Your Information
Next, you’ll be presented with a blank page and a series of design templates to your left. Scroll through the list to find a design you think will be a good fit for your first page. Remember, you can add as many pages as you like later.
Many of them are free, while premium templates typically cost around $1 (still a great price for those on a budget!) When you find a template you like, click on it and drag it into the blank page space.
Next, you can insert your own titles and information into the template by clicking on various components, deleting the existing text, and writing in your own. You’ll be able to change font style, size, and color, as well as the location and size of your text areas.
Step Three: Adding Specialty Text
If you select “text” on the left-side tool bar, you’ll be presented with a number of different headline and textual designs that you can add to your infographic. These types of designs are attractive and professional-looking—I’d recommend trying a couple out and seeing what they can bring to your infographic.
Step Four: Adding Images
If you select “uploads” on the left toolbar, you’ll be prompted to add images by uploading your own, importing from Facebook, or searching through their library. Drag images onto the desired space on your infographic. You can resize, reposition, and crop images using your mouse and the toolbar.
After you create your first page, you can create additional pages by clicking “add new page” and repeating this process.
You can get a better idea of how your completed infographic will look by using the buttons on the left tool bar to zoom in and out.
Step Five: Sharing Your New Infographic
Once you’re satisfied with all your pages, you have the option of downloading your completed infographic as an image or a PDF, or sharing it instantly via Facebook, Twitter, Pintrest, or email. If you’ve used any premium templates or images, you’ll be prompted to provide payment info first.
Canva Infographics: The End Result
Once you’ve used the tool once or twice, you’ll see why I’m such a big fan. First of all, the price point can’t be beat. Even if you end up using a few premium template or images, it’s less expensive than hiring even the most budget-friendly designer.
And that’s because the process is so simple that you don’t need a designer. You (or someone else on your team) just has to have a good eye. The click-and-drag nature of the tool means that you don’t require any formal background in high-end design tools, just a little bit of comfort with technology.
And above all, the end result can look phenomenal. A typical problem with infographic creation tools is that the final images tend to look a little too cookie-cutter and similar to one another. But the high level of customization available with Canva means that your infographic can look unique and fit the needs of your particular topic.
